A Christmas Greeting, Brief but Meaningful, from The Raven

TO ALL : PEACE AND GOODWILL

This is the Festive season.  Deeper than this it is also the Season of the greatest of all Mysteries: ‘the intersection of the timeless /With time.’ (T.S. Eliot), the celebrating of the majesty and miracle of the Christ Incarnate. Whether you believe this or not doesn’t really matter – it’s one of the great myths composed by us as Humans, trying to make sense of our Being in time.

Here is one way of thinking about that – this is an excerpt from a recent FranzWright poem. Find it and read the rest.

                                    NATIVITY

At the conclusion of nine months’

                        silent communication

                        interrupted on occasion

                        by long one-sided conversations

of a teary and somewhat excessively candid nature,

and after some very loud mutual screaming,

the two were at last introduced. A shadow

as of vast wings passed across them,

in a manner of speaking: he slept, the

small bud of face unclenched. Later on,

still drowsing, he was relatively certain

he had at some point overheard her claim

that while nursing he never stopped staring

                        into her eyes

That’s right on it, the seasonal recognition – that ‘shadow as of vast wings’.

                        The Angel of the Nativity.

                        The Angel of the Road.

See you in the New Year, on next year’s Road.
